Substitute holidays (대체공휴일, shaded) replace a holiday that falls on a weekend. Dates follow Korea's official holiday rules; the government confirms them each year, and we'll update this page if anything changes.
Long weekends in 2027
- Seollal: Sat, Feb 6 – Tue, Feb 9 (4 days). Seollal falls on a Sunday, so Tuesday becomes a substitute holiday.
- Chuseok: Tue, Sep 14 – Thu, Sep 16. Take Monday the 13th and Friday the 17th off and you get 9 days in a row (Sep 11–19).
- 3-day weekends: Feb 27 – Mar 1, Aug 14–16, Oct 2–4, Oct 9–11 and Dec 25–27.
- Buddha's Birthday: Thu, May 13. Take Friday off for a 4-day weekend.
Travelling to Korea during the holidays
During Seollal and Chuseok, millions of people travel to their hometowns. Trains (KTX) and intercity buses sell out weeks ahead, highways are jammed, and many family-run restaurants and traditional markets close for one to three days. Big department stores, cafés in Seoul and tourist sites such as Gyeongbokgung usually stay open, and palaces often hold free events. Seoul itself is unusually quiet, which makes it a pleasant time to walk around the city.
